The Legacy of
The Peacock Revolution

A Multimedia Special Project

Welcome to my final year project! This is a multimedia journalism project centred on the lasting influences of The Peacock Revolution and adjacent historical menswear movements such as dandyism and modernism. This project consists of four individual elements that each explore a different aspect of this vast subject matter. Through an integrated combination of written work, podcast production and audio-visual content, I hope to shed light on how the outlandish sartorial styles of the past inform the way men dress today. This project’s first piece brings cause for celebration! A textile design brand called Dashing Tweeds is turning twenty this year. Hear from company co-founder Guy Hills on how his work has been inspired by the ghosts of Saville Row past. Next, delve into modern Mod mania and explore the newfound appreciation for Mod clothing amongst today’s youth. Central to this trend is Daniel Warner’s Modfather Clothing Company which has become so popular as of late, it’s opening new shops in Camden Town this spring. Then, behold the regal and refined way of being that is dandyism. The traits that make this ancient lifestyle unique seem to have stayed consistent since its inception in the 19th Century. Hear from the man who wrote the veritable guide on the matter, Robin Dutt, about why this form of self-expression is as poignant today as it ever was. And there’s more, the last piece in this project explores the intersection between ethnic identity and peacock menswear. In remembering my dapper grandfather, I highlight the role that heritage plays in the clothes that men wear. In 1968, journalist George Frazier coined the term 'Peacock Revolution' to describe the newly eccentric menswear of his day's youth. It was an apt term; the huge degree of socio-economic and political developments seen during the late sixties culminated in the birth of a truly dandy display, especially among young men. Designers like Micheal 'Mr' Fish, Pierre Cardin and Paco Rabanne bottled the excitement of their era's zeitgeist, producing bright and beguiling garments that differed starkly from the uniform, conservative dress codes of previous generations. The movement saw an enormous melange of British, continental European and South Asian influences, demonstrating a global phenomenon. Today, vintage enthusiasts and nostalgia lovers around the world have adopted these same flamboyant fashions, bridging the ornamentalism of old with the digital dynamism of the new.
